How plans and billing work

Your organization's plan decides how much of Jaah it can use at once. Billing is how the organization pays: for the plan, for nodes Jaah hosts, and, if it chooses, for the AI its tasks use. All of it lives under Billing in the sidebar, which only Org Owners and Admins see.

This page explains the ideas. For the steps, see Check your plan and limits, Ask to change your plan and Check your Jaah AI spend. For every section and button, see the Billing reference.

Terms

TermMeaning
PlanWhat your organization is signed up for, and the limits that come with it. Every organization has exactly one.
TrialThe free plan every organization starts on. Trial — free, no expiry: it doesn't run out.
LimitThe most of one thing your plan allows, shown as Used / allowed. Unlimited means no limit.
SubscriptionA paid plan, paid by card each period.
HostingA node Jaah runs for you, paid monthly or by the hour. See How nodes work.
Jaah AI accountAn AI account run by Jaah that your tasks can use instead of your own, paid per token.
Jaah AI balanceYour organization's prepaid credit for the Jaah AI account.

What a plan sets

A plan sets six limits, one for each kind of thing your organization uses:

LimitWhat it countsWhere it's explained
Concurrent runner slotsRunners working on tasks at the same time. How tasks work
NodesThe machines your work runs on.How nodes work
ProjectsThe projects in your organization. How projects work
UsersThe people in your organization. How team and access work
Active worktreesWorking copies in use by tasks right now.How worktrees work
GitHub runnersGitHub Actions runners hosted on your nodes. How nodes work

A limit is checked when something is added, never afterwards:

  • When a project, node, person or GitHub runner would take you past a limit, Jaah refuses to add it and says Limit reached. Nothing you already have is removed.
  • When every runner slot or worktree is in use, a new task isn't refused. It waits, and starts as soon as a running task finishes.

A lower limit never takes anything away either: if you're already above it, what you have keeps running, and you can't add more until you're back under it.

Plans and how they change

The Plans list shows every plan with what you can do about it. A plan with a price can be bought with Upgrade (a dearer plan) or Switch (a cheaper one); a free plan offers Choose; a plan set up with the Jaah team is labelled Contact us; a plan not on sale yet says Coming soon. When no paid plan is on sale, the Subscription page shows Upgrade — coming soon. Its Contact us button is the way to ask for a different plan or a higher limit.

A paid plan is a subscription with a lifecycle: it starts when its first payment goes through; a switch to a cheaper plan, or a cancel, takes effect at the end of the period already paid for and can be undone until then; a failed payment is retried while you keep the plan; and a plan whose payments stop ends, putting the organization back on Trial's limits. Nothing that's running is stopped by any of these. The states and their buttons are listed in Subscription.

Who can see and change it

  • Org Owners and Admins see Billing: the plan and its limits, hosted nodes, invoices, cards, the Jaah AI account and its spend. Only they can buy, change or cancel a plan.
  • Other members don't see Billing. When they need a higher limit or a different plan, they ask an Owner or Admin.

Roles are explained in How team and access work.

Two ways to pay for AI

Every task is worked by a runner that calls an AI model. Your organization pays for those calls in one of two ways, never both at once:

  • Your own accounts — your organization's own model accounts: subscriptions people sign in to, or API keys. Their cost is billed by the AI provider, not by Jaah, and never appears on the Usage tab. See Model accounts.
  • The Jaah AI account — work runs on Jaah's account and is paid per token from your Jaah AI balance. When the balance falls to its pause point, work on it pauses until you add credit.

Org Owners and Admins choose between them on the Jaah AI page under Billing, in Jaah AI account. When the Jaah AI account isn't offered to your organization, it shows why, for example Not available, and your tasks run on your own accounts.
