Steer an epic's subtasks
An epic runs its subtasks for you, but you can still step in. Each subtask is a task of its own, with its own page and its own ⋯ menu, so most of what you do with a task you can do with a subtask.
Who can do this: starting, stopping and resetting subtasks need edit access to the epic's project.
Start a subtask now
Subtasks normally wait for the ones before them. To run one straight away:
- Open the epic and select the Subtasks tab.
- Find the subtask. One that hasn't started yet has a Start button on its row.
- Hover Start. Its tip says it dispatches the subtask now, ignoring the subtasks it would otherwise wait for.
- Select Start.
- Watch its state change to Queued, then Running.
Start a subtask early only when you know it doesn't need the work of the ones before it.
Stop or redo a subtask
- Open the epic and select the Subtasks tab.
- Select the subtask's title to open its page.
- Open its ⋯ menu.
- Select Stop to pause it, or Reset to put it back to a clean draft.
- To change what it does, select its Task tab, edit the description, and select Go.
What each of these does is in Stop, restart or reset a task. An epic itself has no Reset: to start part of its work over, reset that part's subtasks.
Park the epic while you wait on a customer
Waiting on customer… is set on the epic, not on its subtasks.
- Open the epic.
- Open its ⋯ menu.
- Select Waiting on customer….
- Optional: type a Note saying what you're waiting for.
- Select Stop and wait.
